Week 7

This week was dedicated to editing the footage from last week. I developed a rough cut in DaVinci Resolve attempting to colour grade as I go. Because I want to achieve a dark blue night sky I had to research and experiment how I could transform my daylight footage into night. I experimented with premiere pros blue day to night preset on my Blackmagic footage. This is the result:

Masking process:

This result was quite convincing for a night shoot. I like the subtle highlights on the chair and table. However, this footage is now too dark to recognize the setting as the detail in the trees and hills is lost. I tried adjusting the brightness levels and masking off certain areas but it just didn't look as realistic after these alterations. Hossein highlighted a way to create a similar night effect in Nuke. By replacing the sky and adjusting the sky and foreground separately, I can achieve a better result.

Rough edit

I then attempted to adjust the lighting and colour of the interior shots. Most of the interior shots were filmed a night, however due to time restrictions, I filmed in the day too. Because of this, any shots with daylight exposed had to be masked and edited to look darker. This was difficult to achieve a realistic edit in Resolve. I will most likely need to re-edit in Nuke, especially if tracking is involved.

Going forward, I aim to have the rough edit completed by next week with sufficient colour grading before editing in Nuke.
